WHO I AM

My Background

I am a born and raised BC native, which instilled in me a love of the mountains and ocean. Being near these natural wonders brings me peace and a deep sense of home. When I have time, or need to get recharged, you will find me in one of those places. I also enjoy being with people and I derive energy from being with others. I have been in the service industry in some shape or form ever since I got my first job at 15. This love of people and the world we live in lead to pursue a career as a naturopathic doctor. I have always longed to make the world a better place and it is my sincere belief that the careful practice of naturopathic medicine can do just that.

I studied at the University of British Columbia, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Global Resource Systems. It was in this program, where I learned the phrase, "Think globally, act locally". This idea started to open my eyes to new ways of interacting with my environment both social and physical. Through this journey I realized that there were others ways of seeing health and medicine as well.

About a year and a half after the birth of my daughter I went back to school to pursue a career as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine at The Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in New Westminster. While in school and shortly after, my family grew and I now have the privilege of raising four wonderful children. I always knew that I wanted a large family, and despite the obvious challenge of living in a home with six strong, and often opposing wills, I love the life I am living. I would like to offer my many years of raising small children, studying, clinical practice and running my household to serve my community as their naturopathic doctor.

NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease. Symptoms of disease are seen as warning signals of improper functioning of the body, and unfavourable lifestyle habits. Naturopathic Medicine emphasizes disease as a process rather than as an entity. (Taken from CAND website 1) This leads to tailored treatments for each individual that focus on prevention, getting to the root cause of disease and treating the whole person. I love how naturopathic medicine offers an alternative to an overextended health care system. The hospital is the perfect place to go when you have pneumonia or a broken arm, but it is not great at addressing chronic low energy or digestive issues.

In British Columbia, Naturopathic Doctors are licensed and regulated by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia (CNPBC). Training for NDs includes: completion of a university undergraduate degree, followed by a four-year accredited naturopathic medical program. NDs must complete 4800 classroom hours and1500 hours of clinical training, and must successfully complete the NPLEX (North American Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Exams) as well as provincial board exams in order to be licensed in the province. In order to stay licensed, every ND must accrue continuing education hours. This enables us to stay up to date on the most recent medical research to best serve our patients.
